Mid Back Pain

Back pain of any kind can cause great discomfort and prevents many people from leading the type of life they would like. There are a wide range of causes of back pain but perhaps the most prevalent are injury to one or more discs or a degenerative disc disease.

So what does all the jargon mean?

Disc Degeneration - this causes water to be lost from the gaps between the vertebrae. This means that the gap reduces in size and the nerve is pinched between two vertebrae.

Ruptured Disc - When discs rupture a jelly like substance is leaked which is called nucleus puposus, this form of back problem can be very serious.

Bulging Disc - This condition is quite common and discs can be seen to bulge as our daily activities are carried out and our back has to support our full body weight. They then usually return to normal when we go to bed at night.

Mid Back Pain has numerous causes usually related to poor posture both when we sit and stand in the same position for long periods of time. Badly designed chairs which do not offer enough proper support for our backs can also cause mid back pain. One which perhaps a lot of people would not associate with back pain is excessive worry, anxiety and stress which can cause tension and stiffness in the muscles resulting in painful backache this cause is actually one of the most common.

The way in which Mid Back Pain is triggered can often give a good indication of the cause. If you are carrying out your normal daily routine which includes the usual mix of bending and twisting and stretching it is possible that the mid back pain you experience is due to a slipped disc or a pulled muscle. Pain which is caused by the muscles is usually caused by heavy lifting. A fractured rib will cause pain in the mid back as well and it will also affect the chest. This could possibly signal osteoporosis or an injury caused in an accident of some sort. Pain in the mid back and great discomfort whilst using the loo may suggest that a kidney infection is in evidence.

One very common cause of Mid Back Pain is an ulcer in the stomach, this type of mid back pain will greatly intensify after eating. Another is due to over zealous exercise, particularly if you are not used to doing a lot of physical activity it can cause muscle strain.

We take being able to move about and our daily physical activity for granted, it is vital that we take care of our back through gentle exercise and a healthy balanced diet to ensure we remain free from mid back pain.
